Biography

Born February 6th 1969, Masaharu Fukuyama (福山雅治 - ふくやま まさはる) is one of the most famous and successful musicians, singers, actors, radio djs, and photographers in Japan.

Fukuyama 'Masha' Masaharu was born in Nagasaki and had a reputation as a prankster in his youth. He got his nickname seemingly because his father has trouble with his teeth and couldn't say his name properly. He came to Tokyo straight out of high school and auditioned for the Amuse film company. But his first few were spent trying to build a career as a musician. He made his less than sparkling live debut in August of 1989 - no-one turned up. His debut single, released in 1990 didn't fare much better.

But a later single from his debut album Message was used in a Victor TV commercial and he had his break. Weekly broadcasts on the famous All Night Nippon radio show made him a rare DJ/actor combination and also did wonders for his popularity.

He appeared in his first TV drama in 1991, (Because There is Tomorrow) with popular actress Imai Miki. In 1993, the drama Hitotsu Yane no Shita (Under One Roof) was a smash and made a star of Fukuyama. He was chosen that summer as 'best jeanist', a bizarre title that gets a lot of publicity, and he had his first million-selling album Calling. He has since starred in several successful TV series, such as Hitotsu Yane no Shita 2 and Meguriai (Chance Encounter) with actress Tokiwa Takako, for which he has often recorded the title tune.

In 1993, he made his first appearance in Kōhaku Uta Gassen, where only successful J-pop and enka artists are invited to perform.

In 1994, he had his very first platinum selling single It's Only Love/Sorry Baby. A year later, Hello became his second single to sell over a million copies. Squall, Sakura Zaka, and Niji are few of the songs that have made particular outstanding marks in Masaharu's career. Good night was his breakout single which gained a lot more audiences to his music because of its tie-up with a drama.

Almost 100% Masaharu Fukuyama's songs were composed, written, and produced by himself. He has also composed many songs for other artists, as well as drama OST, TV theme songs, Commercial Films OST, and national event theme songs in Japan.

As a renown photographer, Fukuyama was sent to Sydney to cover the Olympic Games by TV Asahi in 2000. In 2001, Fukuyama released his Hong Kong photos collection after a 3 month trip. Most recently, he was the representative of TV Asahi in Beijing Olympics 2008.

This versatile artist has been accredited as the King of CF (Commercial Films) as he has appeared in numerous advertisements for brand names such as Toshiba, Pepsi, Apple, Shiseido, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Suzuki, Suntory, Fujifilm, Xylish, Kewpie, and Pocari Sweat.

In 2007, after four years of disappearance, Fukuyama returned to television starring as the brilliant but eccentric Physics Associate Professor, Manabu Yukawa, in the widely acclaimed television drama Galileo. His outstanding performance in the role enabled him to win the "Best Actor" award at the 55th Television Drama Academy Awards. In relation to the drama, he also formed a band KOH+ with his co-star in the drama, Kou Shibasaki.

According to the annual survey of popular celebrities in Japan by the magazine “Cancam”, Masaharu Fukuyama won the first place for the sexiest body, coolness, sexiest voice, and more. He is liked by all generations because of his appearance, voice and unpretentious personality.

In October 2008, Oricon Style made the annual biggest survey, and Masaharu Fukuyama was ranked first in 5 over 6 categories: “Coolest Artist”, “Most intelligent”, “Sexiest”, “Natural charisma”, “Most beautiful voice”.

He has also ranked for 2 consecutive years as the most wanted Japanese man to get married. This "perpertually popular", "forever famous", "eternal heartthrob" has never been out of top 10 for any popularity charts.

Recently, World Diva Beyonce Knowles, in her Japan's promotion tour, has expressed her strong admiration towards Fukuyama in many TV stations.

NHK has also selected Fukuyama to portray Sakamoto Ryōma, the title character, in the 2010 year-long prime-time television Taiga drama Ryōma-den.

 Stepping Down from ANN
On 2014.12.06, Fukuyama announced during the Tamaradi broadcast that he will be ending the show after its 15th anniversary on 2015.03.28. Fukuyama had been an ANN DJ for 23 years since 1992 and this decision made news across Japan. He explained in the following week that it has become increasingly difficult for him to conduct ANN live at such late hours. Fukuyama has been a fan of All Night Nippon since boyhood, and to DJ for ANN was one of his 3 big dreams when he came to Tokyo. To him, ANN embodies the nature of late night live radio and it is this "live" element which allows listeners to feel that very important connection that he himself had experienced as a boy during those late quiet hours. If he is physically no longer able to conduct ANN live, then he believes it is time he should step down. The idea first came to him during the year-long Ryomaden filming in 2010. (Press reports - 1 - 2 - 3 )

Tamariku Album
As a memento for his 23 years with ANN, an album will be released on 2015.04.08, the week after Tamaradi ends. Comprising of select Tamariku songs that Fukuyama performed during the radio programme, the album is aptly titled "魂リク" (Tamariku). See Discography for more details.  (Press reports - 1 - 2 - 3 - Eng1 - Eng2 - Eng3 )

(福山雅治・西川貴教のオールナイトニッポンTVスペシャル)

When Fukuyama went on one of Nishikawa's ANN programmes earlier in 2001, they
called listeners to write in about their dreams. This idea gave rise to a Fuji TV-ANN
collaboration for a reality show featuring the duo as radio DJs who'd help listeners
achieve their dreams.  Missions included paragliding in Kenya; searching for photo-
shoot models in Moscow; apprenticeship in a restaurant in Italy; playing the Seattle
Mariners in the US, etc.  The tie-in included the following programmes:

[2001.09.30 18:45~21:00] One-off TV show on Fuji TV following the duo over
the 18 days as they took to their challenges, hosted by Souguchi Akihisa

[same night 23:00~24:50] Live All Night Nippon radio broadcast by Fukuyama
and Nishikawa, reviewing their experiences during the trip.

Fukuyama Masaharu Radio Charity Music-thon SP "I'm With U" 24 hrs Radio
(ニッポン放送 ラジオ・チャリティ・ミュージックソンSP 『I’m with U キミと、24時間ラジオ』)

Charity radio programme in support of the 2011.03.11 Tohoku earthquake disaster hosted
by Fukuyama Masaharu for the full 24 hours, joined by Souguchi Akihisa in the 2nd hour &
71 guests who voluntarily dropped in to ANN studios where the live broadcast was made.
April 09 and 10 were originally the days for the Miyagi stop of his concert tour, which were
postponed following massive destruction to the city.

There were hourly reports live from the disaster zones and calls from listeners in the
Tohoku, some even phoning in from the refuge shelters where they were staying. The
marathon was broadcast on AM radio throughout Japan and especially in disaster areas,
where many victims had only the radio to access news for rescue and delivery of lifeline
necessities.

More than 10 hours into the show at the regular Tamaradi slot [23:30~25:00], Fukuyama
held a mini 90 min concert live on radio, before resuming the last 12 hours. Footage of this
concert was subsequently released on DVD with his 27th single Kazoku ni Naroyo / Fighting
Pose (limited edition charity single).

It was reported that the special programme itself raised a total of 103 million yen (US1.3M)
from listener donations between April 09 to May 31. Within 24 hours of the broadcast, over
20,000 people had visited the studio to donate, and 3,000 waited in the street outside for
Fukuyama after the show. Official Nippon Housou event blog (here) (Press reports - 1 - 2 )

Radio coverage of the concert by Fukuyama in Miyagi-ken (Ishinomaki City Sumiyoshi
Middle School) for the students, their families and other FM listeners. A teacher from
the school had written in during the 24hrs charity radio music-thon in 2011.04, asking
for help and supplies as the school was hit in the tsunami. Fukuyama had since visited
the school a few times, bringing supplies with him, and he chose this as the MEET THE
MUSIC venue when he was invited to hold the annual FM live event for 2012. The 1st
hour was broadcast live on FM radio network on 2012.03.08 and the full version was
finally aired some months later.  Official Facebook (here)  MTM site (here)

Some Facts and Trivia

* My Studio Live Request (俺のスタジオライブリクエスト)
A special Tamaradi show broadcast on the anniversary Saturday of the Great Hanshin Earthquake every year. When the Great Hanshin Earthquake struck at 05:46 am on 1995.01.17, Fukuyama and his staff were in a taxi departing from the recording studio in Osaka after finishing his live All Night Nippon radio show (1995.01.16 25:00~27:00) Normally broadcast from Tokyo, he was in Osaka that particular time. From the following week onwards (1995.01.23), Fukuyama initiated "My Studio Live Request" as a regular routine in support of the disaster victims. This practice continued until his last Monday ANN show on 1998.03.30, and is reprised annually now on Tamaradi.

* Daybreak Coffee (夜明けのコーヒー)
During his first All Night Nippon time slot in 1992 (Thursdays, 27:00~29:00), Fukuyama and his staff would physically hand out coffee to passers-by outside the main entrance of ANN HQ in Yurakucho at the end of each show. This routine was soon scrapped when the roads were inundated by fans, causing the nearby Marunochi police station to step in and instigate crowd control. (Source: wikipedia)

* 2004 Niigata Earthquake & JR Train Derailing
On 2004.10.23, an earthquake struck the Niigata Prefecture at 17:56. During the last part of Tamaradi that night, Fukuyama received an email from a listener, who was stuck inside a JR shinkansen train that was derailed by the earthquake.  As Fukuyama called him back, the 140+ passengers had just been rescued and were walking along the tracks to the closest station. They had been trapped in the train for close to 7 hours. (Many thanks Elisa for the translation)

* World Aids Day 12.01
The first Saturday of every December is the designated World Aids Day special on Tamaradi.

* 2626 Campaign ("fumufumu" campaign)
To celebrate Fukuyama's 26th birthday (1995.02.06) and the release of his 10th single "HELLO", a special event was organised by his fanclub BROS. Members were invited to write in and Fukuyama would visit the house of one lucky winner. The winner was not aware of the selection, but her family members were notified and enlisted to help keep the surprise. On early morning 1995.02.19, Fukuyama called on the house. Accompanied by the winner's parents, he woke her up with a live acoustic rendition of "Hello" in her room, and stayed on to perform with the family thereafter. Fukuyama talked about this on his All Night Nippon of 1995.02.20, he spoke to the winner on the phone during the show and an audio extract of the visit was broadcast. A report of the event was also included in the fanclub's quarterly BROS Magazine.

* 2008 Nagasaki Signatures Campaign
Following a series of tragic crimes and events in Nagasaki during the mid-2000's, Nagasaki Youth Association began a campaign to cheer up the residents of the city. During 2008, they collected 63,166 signatures (equiv. 1 out of 7 in Nagasaki's population) requesting Fukuyama to return for a concert in his hometown. The campaign leaders were invited to Tamaradi on 2009.05.23 and presented the signatures in person to Fukuyama. During his trip to Nagasaki for the Photo Stage III exhibition in 2008.04, he had seen people collecting signatures in the streets from his car by chance and was moved to tears upon hearing their purpose. The Inasayama Concerts (2009.08.29 & 08.30) were announced on 2009.01.02 to run in parallel with the 2009 Michishirube Tour. Over 80,000 people attended the 2 days (many from outside Nagasaki), thereby generating an estimated economic impact of 1.5 billion yen for the city. Press reports (1) (2)  Fans forum (here)

Regular Television Series

Variety Programme

[2002.01.12~09.28] Fukuyama Engineering (福山エンヂニヤリング)

- KTV (Fuji TV), Saturdays 23:00~23:30
- Hosted by Fukuyama as Factory Chief and Terry Itō as Factory Supervisor
- 1 pilot and 36 episodes

Quote from: IMDb user review
Kudos to a pop idol trying to pursue simple pleasures

The premise of this variety/talk show revolves around Fukuyama Masaharu's pursuit of quality items that are either inherently valuable or capture some sort of simple pleasure. Every week he invites celebrity guests to his television "factory" where they conceptualize, design and create various goods. Given his diverse interests, Fukuyama dreams up varying themes for each show. Past items have included everything from synthesizing his own brand of sake and spices under the watchful eye of masters; the building of a customized, souped-up scooter; planting himawari (sunflowers) and eating regional dishes in his native Nagasaki as inspiration for a new recording; designing luxury bath goods; building a guitar from a motorcycle gas tank; recording new songs in his studio; and cooking outside under the stars. Admittedly, some seem a little silly when taken out of its Japanese context (a spiffy, portable ashtray?) but it's clear that Fukuyama, who is now in his 30s, is trying to pursue things of quality and substance.

The set of Fukuyama Engineering is a hip workshop that pays homage to American iconography. Wall items include a Texaco sign, Rt. 66 pics, license plates, and an enlarged PMRC warning label. Despite the set, though, the show's truly about pursuing quality elements and goods that are of Japan; a rare (and admirable) quest in an entertainment industry full of those pursuing trivialities. In addition to producing goods for general sale, Fukuyama Engineering has also led to a new album of classic covers called The Golden Oldies."

Fukuyama attended all the 3 premieres - Japan (06.23), Hong Kong (06.27), Taiwan (07.04), making this his first official overseas appearance in HK and Taiwan. See calendar below.
